Capistrano Valley High School participates in the South Coast League, one of the toughest leagues in California. Other members of the South Coast League are Aliso Niguel High School, Dana Hills High School, Mission Viejo High School, San Clemente High School, and Tesoro High School. In 2006 the Cougar Athletic Program was honored by CIF as the Orange County Champion for Character school. In the past thirty years of its existence, our wrestling program has distinguished itself as an outstanding competitor, with frequent entries into CIF finals.

The 2008-09 wrestling season has proven to be our most successful season in years! Not only did the varsity wrestlers finish 2nd in the South Coast League, but they also had a league-high five wrestlers finish in first place! Of the six who went on to CIF Finals, four continued on to Masters. One lone wrestler, Mike Maierhofer, continued on to compete in State. Congratulations to all of the varsity wrestlers this season!

Even more successful this year was the undefeated Frosh/Soph team, who mopped up the mats with their opponents this year! Many of them spent so little time on the mats (due to some very quick pins), the team photographer had very little time to capture their efforts. Congratulations to our outstanding Frosh/Soph team!

Finally, Coach Gonzales was honored as the South Coast League "Coach of the Year" by the Orange County Wrestling Coaches Association, and Joe Zeller was named "Assistant Coach of the Year," confirming what the parents and wrestlers already knew. Congratulations to Coaches Gonzales and Zeller!
